RESULT IN BRIEF

THE CHALLENGE

asecos was facing the challenge of making its ION-LINE product range — specialized cabinets for the safe storage of lithium-ion batteries — digitally accessible. The models are technically complex and require a high level of explanation in a consultative sales environment. Each variant comes with its own set of features and must be precisely tailored to the customer’s spatial and technical requirements. In the past, this resulted in numerous follow-up questions, significant consulting effort, and an inefficient inquiry process that required direct personal interaction.

The new process was intended to deliver far more—for both customers and internal teams: greater guidance, greater independence, and greater transparency. The goal was to create an intuitive inquiry process that complements personal consultation rather than replacing it. At the same time, end customers should be able to configure products independently, enabling asecos to reach additional customer segments.

THE SOLUTION

The online 3D configurator maps a seamless digital process—from initial selection through to a technically accurate production drawing. It combines automated lead generation with a structured, better-prepared personal consultation, making the inquiry process noticeably more efficient. Distributors and end customers reach the right model more quickly, while the sales team works with more complete, technically validated inquiries and gains time for what truly matters: consultative engagement. Production benefits as well: although all inquiries continue to be handled by sales, the configurator provides manufacturing with complete technical drawings and bills of materials ready for immediate use.

In the past, deviations from standard configurations often triggered time-consuming internal loops across multiple departments. Today, the data-driven process significantly shortens these coordination cycles, saving up to two days.

Users enter the process via the product finder on the asecos website, which draws its data directly from the PIM system. From there, the journey continues along two paths: a guided configuration for end customers and a fast-track option for the sales team. The guided configuration relies on concise, targeted questions that identify the appropriate model in the background and display it in the CADClick ®viewer; including freely adjustable shelf spacing. To enable this level of flexibility, asecos also introduced new production processes. The system automatically generates 3D models, technical drawings, dimension sheets, bills of materials, and PDF documents, and users can add compatible accessories before checkout. Internally, clear serialization of individual components ensures well-structured quotations, especially when standard packages combine with customized configurations. The sales team benefits from an even faster workflow: they can configure models directly and reopen and continue inquiries online — an ideal setup for on-site customer meetings.

Fast-track entry to the configurator for sales teams.

During development, the team relied on small, agile steps, rapid data availability, and a shared target vision. The project team integrated new requirements iteratively, as the configurator aimed to simplify not only customer-facing processes but also internal workflows. The timeline proved exceptionally short: only around eight months passed from initial concept to go-live. From a technical perspective, 3PQ® manages the rule-based configuration logic, while CADClick® delivers the 3D visualization and forms the foundation for automated data outputs. Users receive real-time visual feedback and can also place the model in a virtual environment using a QR tag.

The ION-LINE configurator represents far more than a standalone digital project. asecos now uses it as a blueprint for future configuration initiatives. Building on these insights, the company plans to gradually transfer additional product lines into comparable self-service processes. At the same time, the team is preparing further integrations — such as connections to the PIM and ERP systems— to extend the digital process chain even further.
