WEG ranks among the world’s leading manufacturers of electric motors, drive solutions, and related equipment. The company operates in around 140 countries, employs approximately 40,000 people, and generated revenue of about EUR 6 billion in 2024. With an annual output of more than 19 million electric motors, WEG counts as a global market leader in its industry. The product portfolio includes electric motors, frequency inverters, soft starters, controls, switchgear systems, transformers, and generators. Through strong manufacturing expertise and a robust international presence, WEG supports customers worldwide in implementing reliable drive solutions.
CUSTOMER: WEG
INDUSTRY: Electrical engineering
PROJECT: Globally deployable system for the selection and configuration of gear units and geared motors
SOLUTIONS: Web-based 3D configuration including CAD publishing and e-commerce integration
TECHNOLOGIES: 3PQ® , CADClick®
The project focused on one question: How to standardise, accelerate, and technically secure the global selection and configuration of gear units and geared motors? The goal was to create a globally standardised solution that combines product selection, configuration, automated calculations, and comprehensive technical documentation — from data sheets to 2D and 3D drawings — in a single tool. In the long term, the platform also needed to support future digital capabilities. At the same time, the solution had to integrate seamlessly into WEG’s existing system landscape and effectively support its global operations.
Previously, teams across the globe selected and configured gear units using different tools and approaches that had evolved over time. This resulted in long lead times, significant coordination effort between locations, and an increased risk of errors in calculations, documentation, and quotation processes. The organization’s complexity further amplified these challenges: numerous plants, subsidiaries, and manufacturing plants, along with a wide range of product series, variants, and interdependencies, required precise technical logic and reliable calculations. End-to-end integration across systems was missing. The project objective, therefore, became clear: to establish a central global platform that standardizes and shortens processes, significantly reduces workload for customers and internal teams, and ensures reliable administration and handling of product data.
Today, WEG relies on a powerful, globally available configuration platform based on 3PQ®. The solution enables fast and intuitive selection and configuration of gear units and geared motors based on application-specific input data. The system automatically performs all required technical calculations, provides accurate product recommendations, and produces consistent technical documents and drawings.
Managing the extensive product complexity played a key role in the implementation: more than 1,700 product attributes, numerous variants, and a large number of CAD model variations had to be mapped within a single solution. By combining the 3PQ® configuration platform with the CADClick® modules, the project team efficiently managed this complexity. The solution now supports reliable product selection, full transparency throughout the ordering process, and real-time visualisation, including automatic generation of precise CAD models.
Seamless integration into WEG’s existing e-commerce environment allows users to transition smoothly from configuration to ordering without media discontinuities and to process configured products directly. Performance, security, and availability were key priorities throughout the project. To meet these requirements, the configurator operates in two geographically separate hosting regions — South America and Europe. In addition, integrated analytics provide valuable insights into usage and market data, such as the number of users and their geographic distribution, enabling data-driven decision-making.
The project collaboration followed an international and interdisciplinary approach. Teams from different business units and countries — particularly Brazil and Austria — worked closely together. Today, WEG benefits from a central, global solution available in more than 20 languages, used worldwide by headquarters, subsidiaries, manufacturing plants, and customers. The platform reduces process times, increases consistency and autonomy across all locations, and establishes a scalable foundation for future growth and the integration of additional product lines.
